North Alabama driver strikes garbage truck, dies in crash

Athens police say one person was killed Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash involving a garbage truck.

Capt. Brett M. Constable said the incident happened about 9 a.m. in the 22000 block of U.S. 72. near Hastings Road.

Traffic investigators say a garbage truck was stopped while collecting residential garbage cans when it was struck from behind by an SUV traveling west.

The driver, whose name has not yet been released, did not survive.
