ENFIELD — Interstate 91 northbound was closed for several hours early Monday morning, after a garbage truck rear-ended a tractor-trailer on the highway and scattered packages across the road, according to state police.

Connecticut State Police troopers were called the scene near Exit 46 for the crash around 2:20 a.m., Sgt. Christine Jeltema said.

"Contents from both vehicles scattered across the highway," she said. The crash also resulted in a fuel spill, she said.

Minor injuries were reported in the crash, according to Jeltema.

In a post on the state police Facebook page, the agency said the garbage truck reportedly crashed into the back of the tractor-trailer, which was carrying Amazon packages.

"As packages were scattered across the highway, troopers closed all northbound lanes for several hours as cleanup took place," the post said.

Jeltema said traffic was diverted off the highway at Exit 46 while the scene was cleared. Two lanes remained closed around 7:45 a.m. before the highway was full reopened.

Jeltema said the DOT and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were notified to help clean up the crash.
