A candle, cross and flowers were placed near the scene of a fatal crash involving a sanitation truck and a man in a wheelchair. The crash happened in the 1200 block of West Patrick Street in Frederick on Oct. 12.

Police said the pedestrian in a wheelchair who was fatally hit by a vehicle on Thursday was crossing an entrance of a retail center on the Golden Mile.

The Frederick Police Department said in a news release on Monday that the pedestrian was a man, but did not provide any other information, including the man’s identity.

Samantha Long, a spokeswoman with the police department, did not immediately respond to additional questions on Monday.

According to the news release and a previous interview with Long, the man was crossing the retail entrance to the Dunkin’ doughnuts shop from one sidewalk to the other when a 2014 Mack garbage truck struck him.

The truck was making a right turn onto the eastbound lanes of West Patrick Street, the release said.

The garbage truck was registered to BFI Waste Services in Hagerstown.

The company that owns BFI, Republic Services, did not respond to a request for comment on Monday.

At around 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, a city police officer on patrol noticed a garbage truck parked on eastbound lanes in the area of 1200 W. Patrick St.

The officer got to the truck and saw the man lying on West Patrick Street.

The truck driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, the release said.

Emergency medical services tried to help the man, but he died at the scene.

Police are still investigating the crash.
