This type of Pierce PUC Pumper truck from Pierce Manufacturing is expected to arrive at the Salamanca Fire Department in the coming months to replace a 2003 pumper truck.

SALAMANCA — More than 18 months after it was ordered, the City of Salamanca Fire Department is expecting the newest addition to its fleet of trucks to arrive in the next few months.

The Common Council Wednesday authorized the acquisition of a new Pierce Enforcer Custom PUC Pumper truck, including all preliminary costs and necessary equipment, warranties and other costs, and further authorizing the issuance and sale of a serial bond and a bond anticipation note not to exceed $800,000.

The council initially authorized the firetruck’s purchase on March 9, 2022.

Mayor Sandra Magiera said the truck has been on order for a while and she recently saw progress photos from Fire Chief Tom Sturdevant.

“They’re to go up on Oct. 16 and take a look at it,” she said. “It’s not all together yet, but it does look nice.”

If there are any issues or select pieces of the truck that need to be changed, it can be done right away. The mayor also noted a color scheme chosen for the truck’s design is red and gray to match the school district’s colors.

A public hearing was also held on the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) Round 7 and NY Forward (NYF) Round 2 grant applications for the city’s Main Street corridor.

Grant Administrator Sandi Brundage said a goal for the city is to bring business back to downtown and help enliven it following a two-day workshop with the Recreation Economy for Rural Communities program, and applying for the grant was the first step on that path.

If awarded, Brundage said the three historical sites they’d like to focus on revitalizing are the Ray Evans Seneca Theater, the 1880 Union Block building and the Dudley Hotel.

“This grant is for up to $4.5 million for those two, maybe three, buildings,” she added.

The council also accepted a $16,500 quote from Inscale Architects of Warren, Pa., for the design and oversight of a new records archive storage space.
