8 girls taken to hospital after passenger van collides with truck in southeast Sask.

Eight girls and their coach were injured when the van they were riding in collided with a truck Thursday in southeast Saskatchewan.

The crash happened at about 4 p.m. CST on Highway 1 near Sintaluta, RCMP said in a news release. Sintaluta is about 85 kilometres east of Regina.

Everyone involved was injured, but there were no fatalities.

Megaen Reader, director of education at Chief Kahkewistahaw Community School, said the girls and their coach are now home after being discharged from hospital.

"Lots of bumps and bruises and one broken bone," Reader said. "But I think other than that, they're doing pretty good, just shaken up."

Reader said the volleyball team was on its way to Indian Head, Sask., to play a game when the crash happened.

RCMP, Indian Head fire department, EMS and STARS air ambulance all responded to the scene.

The driver of the truck, a man from Manitoba, was taken to hospital by STARS. Police said they don't have details about his injuries. He was the only person in that vehicle.

The eight girls and one adult in the van were all taken to hospital with injuries, police said.

"I think we're just really grateful and thankful because it could have been a lot worse than it was," Reader said. "We're thankful to the first responders that were there and EMS and fire got there quickly."

Reader said the girls are in grades 6 and 7 and the coach is a grade 5 teacher.

Indian Head RCMP are investigating, with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.
